    97 SKI GT40 won't start

Help, spent the weekend cleaning and polishing after winter storage. When I got to the lake it wouldn't start. Sounds like the fuel pump is not cycling.
    Any ideas ?

    RE: 97 SKI GT40 won

Check the kill switch (lanyard). I had the same thing with mine this year. The fuel system didn't pressurize. The lanyard was hooked up but must not have been making good contact. I took it off and put it back on and it worked. The switch was going bad so I just tied the wires together and now I won't have any more problems. Kind of a stupid thing anyway if you ask me. If you are stupid enough too fall out of a inboard ski boat you probably need to be taken out of the gene pool anyway.

I agree, check the kill switch.

Not sure I agree that the kill switch is stupid. I've seen people reaching over to grab a ski or something and nearly fall over the throttle and in the water. Smart and reasonable people have brain farts and do stupid things all the time. The lanyard protects them as well as the deviants. (By the way, I never strap the lanyard on. I should but always forget.)

Is the 10 gauge red wire hooked to your battery terminal, or is the big fuse in the holder corroded(main power lead for the computer on the engine).

I had the same thing after I drained the fuel control cell on my 99 GT-40. I just forgot to reconnect the wires that run to the FCC after disconnecting them to drain. May not be your problem, but definitely one of those "start with the easy stuff" things to check.

Thanks for all the ideas. Vince at Discount Inboard Marine had the solution. The inline fuse ( a class g time delay 50 amp) in the 10guage wire connected to the battery was faulty. I had checked it for continuity but apparentlly it was not good enough. I could not find a replacement anywhere. They are apparently problematic. PCM recognized this and changeed the design on next generation motors. Vince (skidim.com) gave me details on how to eliminate this inline fuze by changing the power source to come from the 60 amp breaker on the motor. I located the 10 guage lead where the harness enters the motor compartment and cliped the lead. Put a connector on the end going to the harness and reattached it to the harness side of the 60 amp breaker. The lead to the battery is no longer needed and thus eliminates the inline fuse.

                Happy boating to all!

I have a '94 GT-40 and I have a starting problem occasionally. Usually, it's between sets when the engine has been performing fine. It cranks strong but doesn't fire. All of a sudden, it'll start up a run fine. I never know when this will happen but it seems to happen once an outing.

I also have had a problem occasionally on a full throttle start. I'll lose power and get dark exhaust gas. Seems to be intermittant as well.

The Nautique dealer could not reproduce it in their shop. Any help is appreciated.
