There are probably T nuts on the back side under the vinyl. They may not be stainless and have rusted out. The best way is to remove the staples on that side of the vinyl to gain access . Looking at your vinyl it may be difficult.

Those are fastened with hex nuts under the foam pad. IIRC they are nylon lock nuts and mine just loosened up over time. The only way to get to them is by removing the vinyl in that area unfortunately.

When I replaced the vinyl on my hatch I tightened those nuts down and locktited them.

I had the same problem last year. I removed the whole deck. I carefully removed the staples and used screws with a locking nut and thread lock. I then re-stapled the vinyl. The screws I used were a little bigger in diameter than the stock ones. I just didn't want to redo it again.

We redid the vinyl on ours a couple years ago... mine were loose too. They are nylock nuts sitting inside holes in a little plate, so that the nuts aren't individual 'lumps' under the vinyl. The plate is the same thickness as the nuts. My plan was to secure the nuts into the plate somehow, like with JB Weld or something, so that you could tighten them from the accessible side without them spinning....but then I wound up buying a staple gun and doing the vinyl, and I realized that if they loosened up I could just peel back the vinyl, since I'm totally an upholstery expert now . I put them back in there with red locktite...hopefully they're permanent now...

is that the side that the lift is on? That's the one that was loosest on mine also... I'm careful when I leave it partly open to air out (I do that with the cover over it, just for airflow in the rear compartments while it's sitting) to stick a basketball or something under the front corner of the hatch on the side without the piston/lift on it, sort of holding up that corner...otherwise there's lots of pressure on that back driver's side hinge, with the front passenger side of the hatch wanting to fall down, pivoting on the lift piston, and lifting up on that hinge. ...if that makes any sense at all...
