PCM Excalibur 330 Starter - 2004 SAN

I am just curious about an issue that folks tell me is my starter. I push the keycode, and start button and I get a single "click", push and hold, not turning over. Then after multiple pushes and clicks it will finally turn over. All connections were tight. I just removed the starter and my problem/concern and paranoia is if it is the starter - is there any sort of cross reference or anything. I am in the normal situation of needing the boat for the weekend and running out of time, any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Do these symptoms indicate a starter in your opinion?

Starter or starter relay. On the GM engines, I don't think you can replace the relay separately from the starter though. You can on the Ford starters, but the relays on the GM starters are built in.

First make sure you have a fully charged and fully functioning battery.

Then....make sure the click is coming from the relay/solenoid on the starter. If it is, the starter is bad. It sounds like a bad spot on the rotor or stator. When it lands in that spot, it won't crank. When it lands in a good spot, it works.

I took it to an Electrical fella who tested the starter/solenoid and said the solenoid failed multiple times. In about 10 minutes he took it apart, pulled some parts off the shelf and gave it back. 35.00 later I installed it and it works perfectly. THank you everyone for your help.

I had the bad contact issue within the perko switch, showed the same problem in my 2002. very frustrating until I calmed myself down and started following from the battery back.

Is the relay sealed inside the newer GM starters or is attached to the outside and need to be a marine rated solenoid? Just hoping the OPs starter is still marine rated after the fix. If its sealed inside then I think it's ok. If its attached on the outside you should make sure a marine solenoid was used. Im glad this fixed your issue, just want to make sure it's a safe fix.

I agree and was going to suggest the starter be serviced (because that's what I usually do), but:

1. Not sure about the sealing/marine spec and
2. Repairing actual components seems to be a lost craft.
