'02 Ski 196 Operating Temperature

I bought an '02 Ski 196 with the Excalibur late last summer. No matter how long it ran the temperature would just barely get over 140. This spring I replaced the thermostat with a 160 degree stat (the original was 160 as well) and the boat still runs at the same temperature.

What temperature should the boat be running at? My '79 Ski Nautique runs between 160-175 with a 160 stat.

My 03 with the same motor has an operating range from 158 to 165. When up and running it stays pegged at 162. I wonder if the new T-stat you put in has a problem. Otherwise, you should see temps at or around 160.

Agreed. We've had lower than normal water temp this year, and
thus the boat is running a little cooler. Typically I run about 160
even on a 110 degree day with the water in the high 70s.

Hi AWhite70! My 02 SN 196 runs just below 140 when operating, whether I'm pulling someone or just sitting. That is normal for our year according to SECC in Orlando. The lake temp does matter a little, but mine runs the same in the dead of summer or in March. There's nothing wrong my friend. Enjoy!! :grin: Mike

My 02 San with the Excalibur runs between 140-150, I ain't gonna sweat it too much because it's very consistant in this manner. Good post though because I was wondering if my engine was running too cool as well.

I tend to rely on the exhaust sound and steam a little more than the temperature gauge. If it ever runs too hot the water will boil in the exhaust manifolds causing steam to billow out of the exhaust. It also sounds a little louder if the water in the exhaust has turned to steam. Just remember that a loud motor is cause to look at the engine temp gauge and it may help you avoid cracking exhaust manifolds and warping heads in the event of an impeller failure.

That is dead on right. A little easier to detect in the 02's and up because of the novidamp. Wish it sounded like my 99. Mike 02 196 :grin:

Awhite70 have you talked to your dealership that you bought the boat from and asked if they could checkout with the diagnostic computer to see if the gauge is reading accurate or is off? The Excalibur computer has data out flow capabilities that the diagnostic computer could see if it was running cold. If the engine runs too cool than you could be wasting gas and have accelleraed wear on the cylinder walls.

Awhite70, do you have a heater? My 206/Excalibur has the heater--thus the 160 T-stat. I'd have it checked out. Running too cool is not good either--as indicated by nms1991. There was a thread on here a while back dealing with this issue. Turned out it was a bad T-stat. The post's author is JJ.
