    Steering Column 1993 SN

While replacing my steering cable, I decided to finally deal with the pesky play problem I have in my steering column (Teleflex rack system). I talked to a knowledgeable guy and he mentioned that it might be two nuts that have come loose at the knuckle (tilt steering). I peeled back the sleeve and everything seems tight in there. I can't access two bolts without ripping it apart, but they don't seem like they would effect play in the steering.

Any thoughts or ideas on play in the column? I know it's in the column as I have the cable disconnected at the moment and am just dealing with the column piece.

Attached a pic for reference only as you really can't see much with the pic either.

    Thanks!

Ok, found these two characters hiding inside unit. Tightened up the play a bit, but not 100%. Wonder if I can find a full Teleflex rack system still. Oh well, better than it was.

Between 1997, and 1998, there was a design change in the steering wheel assembly. Changing the steering wheel assembly also requires a different cable. Last time i did this, the assembly, or column was available from Teleflex, but "off catalogue", that is you could order it from Teleflex, but you had to know the part number to ask for.

The same assembly as a 1997 may have been used as far back as 1993.

There is a bushing between the steering wheel shaft, and the bracket that holds the assembly to the helm of the boat, that wears out. This is where the slop, or wobble comes from in the steering wheel.

I imagine that's when they went to the rotary steering rather than the rack? I may be able to find one of those assemblies from a guy in town here.

I'll also check out that bushing before I make a decision on changing everything.

        Thanks!

I need to replace this part - I have it out and it looks like one of these plastic flange bushings. Trying to ID the correct size and a supplier who will sell small volumes. Should be an easy fix once the right part is determined.

Found what appears to be a replacement part at Grainger. Teleflex does not sell the item (dumb) but it looks to be an off the shelf plastic flange bushing.

Took my column apart and it's clear that the bushing on mine is shot and the source of the play.

So, have a bag on they way - if this fits it looks like this should be an easy and cheap fix to the up-down wobble on the steering wheel.
