Thanks Scooter G , I saw that thread but it confused me even more...everyone saying you have to pull the floor (!) to drain the v-drive oil when this thread says you can just cut a carton in half and put it underneath. I couldn't get my bearings in the pics in that thread but the exploded diagram is a little more helpful. I think I need to remove part "43S" which has the screen on it. Is that what I circled in red in my pic? My small amount of oil I extracted has lots of crud floating around so cleaning the screen seems like a must.

Crud doesn't sound good. If I remember correctly, that boat is new to you this year?
I haven't done a change on mine yet, dealer took care of it last Spring. My last boat was self changing, leaked just enough that the oil would stay pretty clean, ha. If there is not a plug on the bottom back side, I have read where they will pull the line at the cooler.
I'm out of my league here, we'll let someone jump in that knows what they are talking about, I'll shutup now, lol.

I drain my V drive oil by draining number -#22. But I only have a 'passenger' side drain plug.

I found using a small aluminum barbecue pan you can wrestle it into place under the V Drive take out that small drain plug with a small crescent and let it drain into the pan.

Ideal step after that is to suck the oil out of that barbecue pan with a vacuum extractor to suck the oil up out of the bilge area.

Then you can crumple up the aluminum tray just to get it out of there.

Refilling is a pain, you have to go very slow and put down some towels to soak up the overflow

And if you don't have a vacuum extractor yet, just get the cheap hand oil pump to suck it up into a quart or a pan so you don't slash oil all over the bilge

          Thanks both—
Scooter G, yep the boat is new to me this year. The oil itself looks good, but ya I saw some black / gummy looking strands (kind of like algae) in the Pela extractor and since that's brand new, I'm assuming they came from the oil rather than the extractor itself. Doesn't look like metal flakes.

biacs — thanks so that Events / Meet-ups / Etc. plug would be opposite from the fill / dipstick side right? Meaning aft side of the boat, starboard side? How hard it that to get to? I'd still like to get the screen out to clean it (#43S), but that could be a good backup plan.

If you look at 6b, the V-Drive oil pan, in the exploded diagram Ifadam referenced you can see the drain plug on it. But the drain plug does not have it's own number. On my 04 SANTE the drain plug is on the back side of the V-drive (toward the transom) on the Starboard side of the boat. You just have to stick your hand down there and feel around, you can't really see it. On some boats it's on the Port side, some have it on both sides.
You are correct on how to remove the filter. For reference, the drain plug is in the same place, just diagonally across the oil pan.

Thanks Beach-TJ, very helpful. Any reason I can't drain via the bolt with the filter attached to it vs. pulling two different plugs?

@Ifadam I don't see why not. It may be a little messier, the filter may cause the oil to go all over, but who knows.
