Went to start the engine, it turned over immediately yet stalled after 1 second. This continued as I repeatedly tried to start. In my very limited mechanical abilities it seems there is a fuel delivery issue. The more research I do, the more potential problems I find, way more than just the fuel pump. Anyone have the same problem? Id' like to at least try and troubleshoot this myself, so I'm looking fro a few places to start. I appreciate anyones help in advance. I repeat I am a novice when it comes to this so if you do offer help, please dumb it down for me. Thank you!!!

It could be your key switch. Power is routed to the distributor while you turn the key to start, when you release the start mode it switches to run mode. It is possible for the Start mode to provide power to the distributor while the run mode does not.
Simple test for this is to hold the key in the start mode a little longer and see if your engine run time increases.
If it does check the wires at the key, if they are good you may need a new key switch.

I did have a post on checking the fuel pressure on a GT-40, but somehow, the text disappeared. I may get around to redoing the post later.
In the mean time, before turning the key on, lift the engine cover or hatch.
Then turn the key on. You should hear the fuel pumps run for about two seconds.
If you do not, try to mess around with the safety lanyard, and the wires on the back of the safety lanyard switch. I think with the key on, once the connection is made, the fuel pumps will run for two seconds.
Also if the engine starts and runs with the key held in the start position, that is also a symptom of a bad safety lanyard switch.

Does anybody use the lanyard????? Is it law it remains in the boat???? Ours is tied off out of the way but have never used one in any boat I have driven other than wave runners. If it is not a law it remains I think I would wire around this switch so it can't ruin your day.
EDIT: OK, nevermind, I just read the posts about lanyard safety.Last edited by Westlotorn; 01-02-2014, 11:47 AM.
