    Interesting Electrical Problem Solved

I know this is long but I hope it helps out. I am new to this board and new owner of a 97 SNOB. This story starts out with me buying the boat Monday. This guy wanted to unload it so I bought it for 13K, awesome, but I new it needed some work. I took it out the next morning and the check engine light was on(I thought crap but the oil press. and temp was fine). Then in the middle of the lake with my 3 yr old it died. After several attempts of trying to retart (the ignition breaker on the drivers panel kept popping) I got it back on the trailer to take home. With a home made fake a lake it fired right up with the ceck engine light on, so I found this web board and fixed that (Thanks Guys), it was the low oil pressure sensor by the distributor. After I got that fixed I decided to change the oil, so I fired it up to let the oil get warm and it quit again. It then would not start b/c I no longer could here the fuel pump priming. Chasing that in circles I finally realized (Thanks to this board again) that I should also be able to hear the pump in the fuel tank kick on, but I could not hear it. Also everytime I had the blower on and turned the key to ON/Run the blower RPMs would drop like there was a draw or short, and if I left it on to long the ignition button in the panel would pop. Man was I scratching my head. So now the chase was running wires down. After several failed attempts checking relays(also the kill switch andneutral safety switch) and other things I about gave up. Finally I decided to see if the wire running from the key switch was the problem, so I traced back to the engine turned the key on and with a test light found there was no power so I cut the wire and allah I had power;hooked it up again, no power. Then as I was disconecting the spliced wires I burned myself( Light bulb goes off in head SHORT). So right after where I tested it is a wiring harness(which sends power to the dash and back) checked power on the other side and none to be found. DING DING DING. I jumped the On/Run switch wire around the harness and boom I have a running motor. So I could not believe it but the harness where they connect has a short some where inside it. I no this was long but I am happy as a pig in mud and had to tell somebody so I put it here in case soebody else gets this brain stumping problem. Thanks again guys and Planet Nautique for this forum.

Feels good when you track down something like that! Congrats and have fun with the boat.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It's the sum of everyone's experiences with diagnosing and fixing problems that keeps the boats on the water. Now we know to check the harnesses too.

      Good job though.
