New starter, still won't crank - '85 Nautique

Went to start motor for first time this season and all I got was a buzzing noise from the starter relay area. I thought the starter was bad and it was after my garage checked it out. I just bought a new one, popped it in and it cranked the engine a just a quarter turn and then resumed the same buzzing noise when I turned the key. I cleaned all connections possible and used a good battery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the ground connection on the engine block (lower right corner if remember correctly). See if it is lose. That was my problem a few moons ago. Dont forget the starting solenoid could be bad.

Also check your battery cables. make sure they are not bad or loose any where from battery to relay to starter. The buzzing noise is most common when you have a low battery, make sure you have good charge in the battery when you are testing the system.

Your '85 Nautique probably has a reverse rotation engine so be sure to get the proper starter when you replace it. A standard automotive starter will crank your engine backwards and it will not start. This doesn't address your problem with the buzzing noise on your original starter but the problem will become even more confounding if you replace it with a backwards starter.
