Boat will not start - 94 Sport Nautique with 5.8L Pro Boss

    Hello,

I have a 94 Sport Nautique with the 5.8 Pro Boss PCM engine. TBI with 300hp.

Brought it to the lake Friday night and it would not start. Engine would crank as long as you held the key but it would never fire. I tried the usual tricks of giving it gas, pumping the throttle, etc. I lifted the engine cover and took off the air filter. When I pumped the throttle the TBI was not dumping any gas into the intake. Which I think normally happens. When I turned the key to run I can hear the (what I think) is the fuel pump humming. I wait for that to stop then I turn the key to start. I have perfectpass wakeboard pro on the boat if that matters.

To get the boat started someone at the launch someone very luckily had starting fluid. I sprayed just a little into the intake and the boat fired up right away without any problem. Boat started fine the rest of the day.

Any ideas? How can I get the TBI to pump fuel into the intake when I pump the throttle with the engine off pre-start?

    Thanks
    Kevin

    dba4life,
I don't know a whole lot about engines and whatnot, but I do have a '94 Ski with the same engine. I didn't think that you were supposed to pump the throttle with the throttle body injection (though I think you can put it to WOT if you flood it).
When I haven't run my boat for a long time and if it is just cranking, I will sometimes turn the key back off. Then when you turn the key to the on position again, you will hear again (what be both think is) the fuel pump again. It sometimes seemed to help... I don't know enough about the engines to know why!

You may want to check your coolant temp. sensor for the ecm.It is basicly the choke for fuel injection and if it goes bad you will have trouble starting when the engine is cold.It is located beside the thermostat housing if I am not mistaken.

You do not pump the throttle on any fuel injection boat as it could flood it out. But if the injector are not spraying any fuel then first thing i would suggest that you do is make sure the ecm is seeing at least 10 volts when cranking(Protec systems are very voltage sensitive). Then check for fuel pressure when cranking it should be 14 to 17 psi.
