Anyone replaced the oil pan gasket on a 2004 direct drive(or similar)? Does the engine have to come out? I have a small oil leak between the front cover and the oil pan. I removed the front cover and then discovered that the oil pan gasket goes into the cover. May not be able to get it back together without dropping the pan. Any advice would be great. Thanks

We used to trim the corners of the timing cover so that they could slip in. Without seeing it it's hard to say. I'm asuming there is a couple inches or so between the pan and the bottom of they boat and that your engine has a one piece gasket not the old three piece deal. If this is the case you could just drop the pan and slip in a new gasket. Timing cover bolts on first.Last edited by Neverenough; 02-22-2014, 10:39 PM.

I was able to seal on with The Right Stuff, I did not wish or have time to pull the pan so I cleaned all the tin well and applied a small amount of "The Right Stuff" to the timing cover where it joined the pan and it worked.
Use a new timing cover gasket and a new front seal. I am not concerned about the timing chain or sprockets. Newer engines are built with the timing chain designed to run over 200,000 miles, your boat will never see that type of use.
