The Works - a toilet cleaner story

I have owned a boat since i was 18. That was 8 years ago (sorry old people). I like my boats to be clean, top and bottom.

My first boat i bought from my parents it was a 1988 sea sprite. 17 feet of amazing when your fresh out of high school. This boat sat in a slip for a few years and developed some pretty nasty yellowing on the gel coat. So when i took it over i got to cleaning. Hours and hours were spent on the hull. Scotch Brite pads worn down to nothingness just to remove the yellowing.

My second boat was a 98 sea ray. Same deal. Hours and hours to get it clean after purchase. Then some more hours during the wintertime.


Yesterday i tried something new. The Works toilet bowl cleaner. I put on some rubber gloves and put this beautiful blue product on a microfiber towel and wiped it down on the hull of my boat. The yellow was gone in SECONDS. No more hard water buildup. Just smooth shiny beautiful white gelcoat. After a spray down of soap and water any residue was gone and now its ready for compound/polish/wax.

Moral to the story. Spend 10 minutes and CLEAN YOUR HULL!

any indication of removing gel coat? Porcelain is a lot more forgiving. Some swear by the magic eraser but there's enough feedback on here to scare me

I can 2nd this. The Works is good. I always am sure to rinse well afterwords. It also does not hurt before hand to try seabrite bio degradable hull cleaner if you don't want to go the toilet bowl cleaner route. The toilet bowl cleaner works better but is more caustic.

Magic erasers dont work. I have tried that quite a bit. As long as you rinse it off, there should be no long lasting effects of the works

Power one hull cleaner works awesome. No fumes of the highly acidic stuff. Smells fine and makes the boat look like new. I have to acid wash my boat after every season because my lake is so shallow and gets very green/turned over during the later months of summer. I would be scared that works might be a little harsh on the gel/trailer etc.

But anyways, spray the stuff on with a chemical/round up style mister/sprayer, may need a little brush action on the bad spots.... for the most part you just wash it off and it makes the boat clean and new again.

I've heard about using any toilet bowl cleaner for years. This past season was the first in many that my boat stayed in the water for any length of time. I used a toilet cleaner from the dollar store and it was amazing.

Toilet bowl cleaner, and hydrogen peroxide, both bought at a grocery store. Mixed 50/50.
Do not let the pretty smell fool you. Toilet bowl cleaner contains hydrocloric acid. But it cleans the bottom of a boat well.
Try not to get it on the trailer. If you do, rinse the trailer very well.

It worked on a boat that spent April to October moored at Boones Ferry landing in Wilsonvile.

If you mix those two chemicals, I would not store any left over... Could be a possibility of build up of fumes in the container.....
