I would suspect the alternator has a bad bearing. The bearings sometimes go bad and cause it to lock up (intermittently).

      Alt. belt smoke

I just have the same problem in my o1 SAN,and find out the reason and solved, my case is some times when start the engine, the alt.don't turn but the alt. belt turn, if you dont notice this, after 20-30 sec you can smell burning,if continue will result burning the belt, try to turn the pully by hand, you may feel hard, try to make turn by a hamer and minus screw driver, this is for emergency repair, I checked my alt. not the bearning problem (but this may different in your caes )
my problem is caused by a rusted coil shell, some area (my one is near pully side) of the shell get rust and expended little bit that easy touch the rotor, to solve this problem simply change a good alternator, can get in DIM,coat $166, but I do repaire it , cost about $20 (for 2 new bearing and a bearing puller and a iosolation spray paint). for do repair, you need to disaemble the alt. see if rust to the rotor and the shell iron,if the iso. paint no more it will make this problem, chek the shell iron carefully, grinding the excess iron, sand whole sell and the rotor and don't forget spray alayer of motor use isolation paint.bearing is cheap, but quite troble toremove the old one,if you don't feel it problem, use it I think no problem. (if you watch the volt meter when start the engine, you know the alt. turn or not)

        RE: Alt. belt smoke

Another thing that happened to me with the alternator belt. My prop had a small ding in it and it caused a very small vibration that i could just barely notice, i would have to call it a micro-vibration. Anyway, after i dinged the prop the alternator belt would often get loose and i would notice because the belt would slip and i could smell it. i would tighten it as tight as i could, then it would get loose again in less than a month, each time wearing my belt down a bit. I broke a few belts this way and actually used to keep an extra in my glove box. After i finally got the prop fixed the alternator never got loose again and the problem was solved.

Forgot to add, the microvibration was causign the bolt(s) on the alternator to vibrate loose which was causing the loose belt.
