Send your used oil off to a lab to have an analysis done. If it's still good, then try keeping it in longer.

      Hey Beach
      Thanks for your response.
I will see if I can find a place to test it. I am in Little old New Zealand I don't think it will be easy or cheap to get it tested.
      Thanks

That is a problem I wish I had.
If I could rack up 100 hours a month I would gladly change my oil.

Just change every 50 hours. Only takes like 15 minutes, maybe change filter like every other time.

Yeah my time is free. Buts it's NZ everything is expensive. $59 for 5 litres of reasonable oil and another $14 for a filter.

If you have to ask the price of a drink you can't afford it.

If you change the filter evey other oil change, you are leaving a quart or more dirty oil in the engine.

If your engine has no problems, and it is running normally, the oil should be good about 50 hours. Without the time and expense of oil analysis, and I agree that would be the best way, you can get an idea of the condition of the oil by comparing it's color from new, to time to change. For example, the oil in my engine (GT-40) goes in a light golden, or straw color. After some use, it gets darker, turns a brown color, and if left in way too long, turns to black. No, I do not wait that long.

The hotter the engine is, the shorter the life span of the oil. The more dirty oil left in the engine, the shorter the life span of the oil. When I do an oil change, I suck some oil out of the engine as soon as possible, often right at the boat ramp, before evew pulling my boat out of the water. I get about three and a half quarts out. By sucking oil out immediately, any sedimenst in the oil does not have time to settle in the oil pan. I then let it drain overnight. About another quart comes out, and with a GT-40 engine, the oil galley does not spill oil in the bilge. A remote filter GM engine will not have this problem. But still let it sit overnight draining oil.

My engine uses the Motorcraft FL1-A oil filter. I think the remote oil filter mount also uses this filter. It is a very common Ford filter. I can get them at Walmart, for less than $4.00 (USA) each. I do not know if you have that type of discount store in New Zealand, but think "outside the box" when looking to buy oil filters. Maybe buy a case of them, mail order. Same idea with oils, but make sure you get the recommended oil.

If you can, when you take a break from using your boat, open the engine hatch. Remember the thing about heat making the life span of the oil shorter? Here is the problem. When the engine is running, cooling water, and fresh air are moving in the engine room. It stays pretty cool. You turn the engine off, no cooling water flows, or air is exchanged, and the engine soaks up it's own heat. Opening the hatch allows that heat to escape.

Running 20 ot 30 hours a week, I would think fuel expense would be a larger concern, than oil and filters. But all three are a cost of operation. If you are trying to run a business, (wakeboarding school) you need to figure in that cost too. Do not forget other items, raw water pump impellers, belts, if closed cooling, antifreeze, and wear and tear, just from the use.

Look at it this way. In two weeks you are putting about the same hours on your boat as many people do in a year. Their expenses are spread out over a year. You will get those same yearly expenses in two weeks, and every two weeks, because you put on a years of use every two weeks.

I run full synthetic and do the oil and impeller every 75-100 hours, we ride a lot so it works out to several oil changes per year. With the new oil and filter technology I think this is fine and I've never had an issue with any of my boats. That being said it's really a small cost in the overall scheme of owning a boat so don't neglect the maint.

How the heck do you put 30 hours per week on your boat?! That's a dream come true!

I'm with DC...I wouldn't hesitate to base it on color.

On the oil labs...every auto sample I've sent in with any miles...the response (in addition to the data) is "Oil Change Required"

Back on the color....I'd watch the color with the hours.

                            +1, good advice

The LS motor in my truck is not asking for an oil change until 7k miles sometimes but it gets quite a bit of freeway driving. I have done some research on the subject and I only change it when it tells me to do so. The motor is supercharged with over 135,000 miles on it and I just retuned/redynoed it at 380 rwtq. I would not hesitate to go to even 200 hours if you are seeing that in less than 2 months. Synthetics do not break down as fast but it seems like cost is the concern so I would stick with an inexpensive good oil like Chevron Delo from a big box store and watch the color. I used to work for Chevron and the lubrication engineers recommended this oil for my boats.

Indmar has proven if you run your boat hard oil breakdown starts as early as 30hrs. Yes, proven, oil breakdown and its burned off....
                              Ran real hard albeit.

North 30hrs, oil starts to head towards dark brown and black, change your oil ASAP.
