gt40 motor leaking water

4th time out this year. PP started going crazy, then water from bilge pump. stopped to check it, found water leaking rapidly from behind the lower pulley, next to the impeller pulley. My first guess is water pump, but I am more familiar with GM engines. Anyone know what is going on? thx!

Not sure exactly where you're referencing but I pull a bolt back there to drain the block in the winter. Maybe it wasn't replaced when you summerized.

There shouldn't be any water in the block that's low enough to come out at the crank. That leaves a couple of places it could have come from that are close.

First is the water pump (circulation pump), it has a hole in the bottom that should weep water when the bearings go out, it's pretty rare for those to go out, but it would drip onto the crank pulley. You should be ale to feel the hole if you can't see it, it's under the shaft that holds the pulley where it starts to flare out.

Second would be the plug in the bottom of the J tube that goes into the goes to the circulation pump. If the plug wasn't put in right or came out water could spray onto the crank.

There's always the possibility that you have a bad hose or hose connection that filled the bilge and the water sloshed into the transom and got onto the crank. Usually when that happens the belts and pulleys will sling water everywhere so you would have wafted dripping from many places.

I have a new PCM water pump for sale if if interested. Circulation pump.... Not raw water.

thx for the replies! I have pulled out the ballast tank and will pinpoint the leak today. I still suspect the pump, looks like the water was leaking onto the lower pulley. there was more water coming out than what I have seen from other pumps that went bad, but not that much more. water is not coming from the j tube or any hose that I could see. ffmedic, will it work on a gt40 engine and how much do you want for it?

You can use it to run water through the engine, without the engine running. That will enable you to closely watch and look for water leaks, without the danger of rotating engine parts.

Yesterday I put the boat in the water. couldn't see where water was coming from. turned off engine and water continued to leak. That told me to look closer at the hoses. I found a hole in a water hose that was spraying a tiny stream directly on top of the lower pulley. I repaired it yesterday. Thanks for the help everyone!
