    The Dreaded Alternator Belt Problem

I bought a '96 with the GT-40 engine last fall and had some time to play with it last fall before the winter. The pulley to the alternator belt is pretty rusted and at least once we had a plum of smoke from the belt. It also has a healthy coating of belt dust on the engine. I've checked the alignment and everything looks good there and the battery is pretty new. Has anyone had any luck finding a replacement pulley or am I better off just springing for a alternator?

    Thanks!

Thanks Jhersey29!! I looked all over for that and couldn't find it. It's on it's way and will post how it works out. Thanks again

I would replace the alternator while you are in there. Good chance it has a bad bearing if you had a plume of smoke from it at any time.

And if you need an alternator I have the stock 51 amp I took off my 99 SS with 100 hours on it you could buy. I upgraded to the 100 amp alternator.

Thanks MikeSki, that might be the best option.

EchoLodge, I'm interested - PM sent.

A month ago I was skiing behind my buddies Tige when we had a similar incident. We stopped at a floating bar for breakfast and returned to his boat an hour later. He goes to start it and the belt starts smoking. A second friend used to build Tige's for a living a knew exactly what was up. Seems the impeller was frozen. He puts a wrench on it and turns it in the correct direction. Problem solved. We changed the impeller to be on the safe side but it looked fine. Odd!
