water in engine compartement? normal?

i have my second hand ski nautique 2001 89 from today, but i've noticed that there is a lot of water in the engine compartement about 2.36 inch high and a little bit at the battery :cry:

now i'm affraid, is this normal and do you have to drain it out with the bilge pump? or not normal

please help

Either run the bilge to get it out or pull the drain plug if it is on the trailer. It is not good to let the bilge fill up for long periods of time because it ruins other parts lying in the bilge such as the starter and the steering cable.

It's probably coming from the packing gland on the drive shaft basicaly has to be checked in the water!!

Other things to check include the hose that connects to the thru-hull fitting for the cooling water and the tubes at the speedo pick-ups (I had that happen on my '94 SN). The speedo tubes, when disconnected, can actually let in a good amount of water.

how long was it in the water? was it 2.36" at the very center because that aint much. if it was in the water for 5 min. i would worry about it and find where it was coming from. if it was 5 hrs. i wouldnt worry a bit. bilge it out and ride. my auto bilge comes on about every 1- 1-1/2hrs. for a minute or two. it probally 2.37" before the auto bilge will even kick on.

gonna look at skidim to order one and a new sealing for my drive shaft, but don't know wich one the 1" or the 1 1/8"

Auto bilge isn't necessary. Turn it on manually every now when you think about it and you'll be fine. We have auto and manual bilge on our '88 and never use auto.

shouldn't need a new packing, just tighten it. If it can't be tightened anymore then you need a new one.
