Over the last couple of outings, my boat's water temp has been reading 170-180 (160 is the norm). This past weekend it shot up to 200 and set the buzzer/light off. I replaced my impeller, thermostat, cleaned my strainer, checked the grill on the water pick up, and checked for good flow out the exhaust. I can touch the risers and they do not feel hotter then normal. I checked all my connections on both the water temp sending unit and the guage. I plan on replacing the sending unit on my next outing. Here is my question! I think the sending unit works via electric resistance. When a 15 year old sending unit starts to fail, would it tend to show a reading that is 200+ even though the boat is running at 160? The boat has 980 hrs.
