    Shaft Packing 2001 SAN

Im about to lose my mind trying to replace the packing or even just tighten it. I cannot for the life of me break the lock nut loose!!! Ive soaked in PB blaster to no avail. Does anybody have any little tricks or tips to try? Im about to drop it off at the Malibu dealer (only close shop) and let them do it.

Just did mine and I used 2 10" pipe wrenches just going through the round access hole. What are you using for a wrench?

      IIRC, aren't they reverse threads?

I am using a 10" pipe wrench and an adjustable sink wrench. Its a v-drive though, so access is a pain. Are they reverse thread? Ive been looking at this thread, http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/stuffing_box , which seems to be standard.

Dumb question and this is probably not your issue but you removed the safety wire right?

i used that same instructional page when i tightened mine and i believe the threads were just as detailed there. that page is priceless by the way ... i got into the port side locker with my head to the front of the boat to get the wrenches on mine. no doubt whatsoever, its a tight spot

Yes, safety wire removed. Ill have to try from the port side locker. Ive been trying from the front of the vdrive and wrapping my hands around from each side.

Maybe they are standard... I worked on something the other day that was reverse about the same time as I did my packing so may have them mixed up.

I already had my floor out and rear seat as I was finishing my ballast install so I got to it from the front. Definitely a tight spot but I had 2 pair of adjustable Chanel locks on there. Tight but doable.
