Re: GT40 and PP Stargazer

I had smoke billowing off the exhaust risers. Since I had just replaced them, I spent days trying to find out why and where. The smoke had a real toxic and plastic smell to it though, and just couldn't make any sense out of it, because the boat was running fine. Well today I'm doing some inspection in the driveway. And when I touched the servo unit I burnt my hand. It was all hot - the servo, frame, and heatsink.
Would this be some kind of internal short, or wiring on my part?
It's probably not wired ideally.... The purple power goes straight to the key switch. And the ground to the ground post on the back of a speedo.
This worked fine up until now. And I don't know how to check that the current setup is still OK. The wiring on these nautiques is rumoured to be on the inadequate side. If I touch a test light to the PP power on the key switch, while grounded to the said ground post on the speedo, is that enough to deem it fit ?
I've had minor gremlins on the dash forever:
- If I sound the horn, PP will power off and then back on.
- cranking the volume on the basic head unit (no amps/subs) would do the same and cut power to it.
How can I diagnose this PP to wiring or servo unit? And how can I begin to clean up this rat's nest of wiring?
