    1997 Sport Nautique issues

    Hello all,

My 1997 Sport Nautique with EFI GT-40 has a couple issues I am hoping that your expertise can help me.

    1. Symptom: very tough steering. I think I need a steering cable but I thought I'd see what the experts on this forum think. Where's the best place/price to buy? I have purchased from Nautiqueparts.com and it was a flawless experience in the past.

    2. Symptom: I have to turn the key over an average of 7 times before the starter is engaged. Most of the time I just get a click. I *think* it's a starter relay. Can anyone help me identify where that is and what parts I would need to purchase one if that's what you experts think it might be.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dwight

The first problem definitely sounds like a steering cable. Order from nautique parts if you can't get it locally. There is a discount code on this site. I think it's PND.

I had a similar problem with my 96 sport right before I sold it. IIRC I had a bad relay. It was on the rear of the engine towards the top. I also had some issues with a in line fuse near the battery.

Same motor here, same issues, same everything.
Follow the cable from your starter and u will find relay. Wasn't too bAd to get to. Relatively easy and cheap.
Steering cable is bad. Don't let any parts counters talk you into using a 20ft cable. U need 19.5

Ditto what Juno said. The steering cable has to be the exact replacement. A cable 6" longer will not work. I ordered mine from Nautiqueparts and it works great.
