    1990 SN Engine Starter Problem

My starter get's stuck and it keeps turning over the engine even with the ignition key in OFF position. Looked like the starter relay was stuck so I got a new one and still the same issue, I can get it un-stuck by hitting it few times.

    What is the problem

    RE: re

i will tell a little story:

-i had the same problem that cinekw describes above.
-i turned the key and the solenoid stuck closed.
-i pulled the battery cables, quickly
-took the solenoid out of the circuit, tested it with an ohm-meter - yup, welded closed - banged it on the floor - opened. threw it away.
-bought a new one. turned the key - solenoid welded shut again.
-this happened with 3 different solenoids. (all that i purchased new - from 2 different places)
-put an old one i had on the shelf in - has worked perfect for 2 years now.
    -odd? I'll say!

now - here is what i have read:

some say that if you have a deep cycle battery and not a marine starting battery that there is too much heat generated in the solenoid, thus people say not to use a deep cycle battery. i find this hard to believe - i would love for someone to comment on this further.

    comments:

i suspect all solenoids are not created equal - perhaps there is a heavy duty one or maybe SKIDIM can help answer that question

    hope you get it working!

          1990 SN Engine Starter Problem

Sounds like you need bigger Battery cables to carry the load!!!!
I replaced them on my Old 84Sn and that fixed the problem???

            It's Fixed

Looks like the problem is fixed, I've replace the relay with used one that I had from another boat and installed new battery.

It's been OK fro the past week, thanks for all the help.
