Shaft packing nut

I needed to replace the stuffing on my 2006 196. The nut came off nicely but will not go back on. Plenty of thread showing. Even without the packing the nut will not thread back on. Any thoughts?

Check out the threads. I had an 05 and turned out the threads were cross threaded from the factory or dealership.

I called Buxton Marine (all the East Coast Dealers were closed @ 5:30 yesterday) They told me to loosen the nuts on the shaft from the tranny. That helped, but I still had to use a pry bar to move the drive shaft around until the nut threaded.
