Unfortunately thats modern life, whether car's,boat's or bikes they are all going drive by wire. Also keep in mind your system was designed and produced by GM,not by PCM or CC and can happen to any company who out sources. Being that these engines and systems are automotive based many times those tech's and forums have much more experience at troubleshooting than many marine mechanics due to the shear volume. Good example is the guy's who figured out a work around replacement of non available Ford GT 40 ECM's If you bought it used it kinda makes you wonder if it had problems before too. It's good you have a dealer who seemed to step up for you too. Good luck with your replacement
