Does anyone know what winch brand/model winch Ramlin is currently using? Getting ready to kick off some more trailer rehab and adding a winch is on the list. In a lot of pictures it looks like they use a Fulton XLT model, but I'm not completely sure.

My buddy has one on his Ramlin. He is up in MA now and his boat is in SC so he won't be able to check until the end of next week. If you don't get a model number before then I will let you know once he has a chance to check. Please post up a DIY thread if you make this mod because I would like to do this as well at some point.Shawn

Ramlin winch

if you're talking jacks, the one I have is luckily adjustable. Had to find the right balance between clearing the garage door and lifting enough to get on the hitch.

Finished this up today and while it came out decent, I may've gotten carried away with the winch. Everything I've read says the winch should be able to handle about 50% of the boat weight, which seems in line with the XLT-18 that TxJole mentioned. Plus, I kinda like the look of the covered winch. That being said, once I got it all hooked up the winch handle wouldn't clear the crash pads, not even close! After quite a bit of bending I think I have it worked out.
In retrospect, I think 1) my trailer seems to have a shorter bowstop assembly than some other Ramlins I've seen, which I'm sure doesn't help. And 2) I'm suspect Ramlin doesn't may not abide by the 50% boat weight rule with the winches they put on trailers since their trailers aren't designed to winch on. I'm down with having the backup in place in case of emergency, plus I'm hoping it'll be easier for me to get the boat up securely into the paddles.

Looks good, thanks for sharing! Do you know if the handle would have cleared the lower horizontal metal arm on the crash pad if you had cut off the crash pad below that or was that interfering too? The reason I ask is because I already shortened the crash pad on the opposite side of my trailer for my spare tire to fit so making the other side even for a winch to clear wouldn't bother me one bit haha. What did you use to cut the square hole for the winch strap? Did you do anything to the edges of the cutout to protect the webbing from chaffing?Shawn

At least at the height I mounted the winch it didn't clear that metal arm, either. And I couldn't mount it much lower due to the winch plastic housing coming being very close to the tension bolt that holds the bow assembly in place. Mounting it any lower would also get in the way of my quick release pin for the folding tongue. Purchasing a winch with a little less capacity and without the pretty plastic housing may've spared me some of this headache!
I paid to have someone else cut the hole, but they didn't do nearly as clean a job as I had envisioned. They did file the inside/outside edges of the cut-out area, primarly along the sides to minimize strap chafing. I don't have that many great tools in my arsenal, but if I did it I would've drilled the four corners and used a jigsaw. We'll see how well it holds up.'08 Super Air Nautique 210
