So here's the deal,
Yesterday we're enjoying a nice Canada day surfing and boarding (mostly surfing) when we notice smoke coming out of the helm and trunk of our 97 SS! This was after some extensive surfing and 6 people on board. We were using two rubber maid containers for ballast across the rear seats. The temp guage, warning lights and engine performance were all perfect.
Of course we pull up and raise the cover--only to find a lot of the smoke (or was it steam?) and a lot of water in the compartment--I think this water was coming from the rubber maids mainly as they were leaking quite a bit. There was a distinct rubber smell to the smoke and we searched and checked belts, hoses etc without trouble. There were also a couple of L-J's and a wetsuit back there but they didn't seem to be in contact with the engine or anything hot.
We bilged and bilged until there was no water to see and then re-checked the guages--then let her rip and, all seemed well. We even pulled one more boarder with absolutely no problem.
So my questions are, was the smoke actually steam from too much water in the compartment? Could the rubber smell just have been heating of the wetsuit or L-J's? Any ideas?
