I just use a regular universal 2-3 jaw pulley puller from the auto-parts store.

Ok just a follow up for anyone interested. If you have a v-drive where the coupling is toward the front of the boat then all you need is a hammer and two spanners! It's so simple and worked extremely easy.
Unbolt the 4 bolts at the coupling so that when the shaft is pushed forward the base of the prop bottoms on the end of the strut.
Now one solid tap on the end of the shaft broke the tapered hold.
I machined up a drift so as to not damage the end of my shaft, but in a pinch you could hit the end of the shaft without too much problem as it is machined smaller than the thread, probably for this reason or use timber, but the more timber or softer it is the harder you're going to have to hit it.
Again like others have said only undo the nit 2 turns so the prop doesn't fall off when you break the hold.

Not so sure you want to be using the strut as a rigid point to hammer against. Yes, it's bolted solidly to the hull but there's a lot of leverage hammering against the bottom of it. I'd just use a proper puller instead.

Thanks for your input Dave, but this thread is about getting your prop off WITHOUT the use of a puller. Those occasions when you need to get it off and don't have a puller handy. And for what it's worth, if my hull were to fail in any way from the tap I gave the shaft then I am selling up and buying a well made boat. The mass of the strut would absorb a large portion of the impact and the amount of force transferred to the fibreglass would be minimised.

Got it, and glad it's worked for you. I guess I've had to struggle with props with no puller before, and always found a way to rig my own or manage with blocks of wood, only used heat once. Plus, I don't own a V-drive!
