I have a 92 closed bow SN with a PCM engine. The starter just spins without engaging the flywheel. Can someone tell me what starter I need to buy. Do I have to worry about whether its righthand or lefthand?
There might be a few exceptions but I think that everything after 88 is regular rotation. I think there was an all white base model Ski Nautique that had the 1:1 transmission and reverse rotation engine in the early 90s. If you have the 1:1.23 transmission then you have a regular rotation motor.

You might be able to bang on it a couple times to let it engage. Otherwise.. yank it out.. bring it to Napa and they can repair it or swap you out with another one. They do core replacements
Be careful using an automotive replacement. There are 3 things on a marine engine mad specifically for marine use. The carburetor, the alternator and the starter. These are made specifically so they will not spark or spill gas into the bilge. That is why they are more expensive. If you can have yours rebuilt that works. If they trade it you want to be sure its a marine grade starter.
Get a gear reduction starter for a ford truck or a mustang. They are sealed and are exactly the same just cheaper than the gear reduction starters sold for boats.
This is the unit I used on my last starter replacement, worked great, much better than stock. Just needed to paint it black before installation.
If you opt to use a large frame traditional starter it must be sealed or equipped with a spark shield. The starter sits low in the boat where fuel fumes like to collect so it must be shielded or sealed. This is probably the most common cause of boats catching fire.
You have a LH (Standard) motor which requires a CW starter. I have the same boat and recently put one of the ARCO's in it. The ebasic website has good diagrams for determining the correct rotation if you want to verify yours.
