2001 Ski Nautique 196 Clunking Sound - Help

Anyone have an idea what would be causing this sound?

Sounds a little bit like gearbox lash. Does it go away when you put in forward or reverse?

It is less obvious in gear but still is apparent. Also is noticeable in reverse. Boat had sat for a year but let it warm up and still made the sound. Otherwise, boat accelerated properly and maintained speed at full throttle.

I had a mechanic look at this and listen to the sound file, he said the rattle or clunking is coming from the transmission and the boat runs a little louder than most. He said the transmission could run for another 10 years or it could fail in the next few weeks. This is a 2001 with 400 hrs on it, however it has sat a lot over the past two years. I am currently debating purchasing this boat, what would ballpark figures be to repair or install a new transmission?

If the rest of the boat is reasonable, sounds like a great negotiation point. I can't advise as to a possible repair cost but if you like your mechanic, start with him.

Assuming it's a 1:1.23 drive, heres part prices from SKIDIM that might give you an idea of some ranges.

Thank you and appreciate the help, i understand there is only so much you can do with an audio file.

MY 99 Ski has been making an identical sound for 3 years now. It's had nearly 100 hours of use in that time, no problems. Can't say for sure if we have the same issue, but it sounded like it on the audio.

Remove the engine cover, rear seat and floor board. This is a quick job to remove them. Bring a helper. You should be able to isolate the sound. Don't step on the muffler.

Might want to check to see if you need an engine alignment. If you close or within an our or two of a good Nautique shop I would take it there for a check over. If you seriously looking at buying the boat the person selling may split the check out costs or negotiate after its looked at. I wouldn't buy it till I knew what the issue is or cost to fix is. Good luck. My 2000 SN has been awesome and wouldn't but a different Manufacturer since its my second CC.
