1999 air nautique gt40 ford 5.8 won't go over 35 mph with no load

Just got the boat and having issues with it. After spending countless hours reading the archives on here I ordered new caps/rotor, spark plugs and wire, fuel filter, fuel pump relay. Just not sure what I'm missing if these don't fix the problem. Tried to ski for the first time and couldn't pull the skier up boat when under loading wouldn't go over 15mph. With approximately 600 pounds gear people in the boat. I ve read about the s.l.o.w. Issue and think that's possibility it. If anyone has any knowledge or the same issue before if you could shed some light it would be greatly appreciated. I just moved to canyon lake ca and looking for people to wakeboard/ski with as well.
thank you in advance for any comments.

It's sticking at 2500-3000 rpms. Also doesn't have a great hole shot it's very slow to get up and go. Just put a new OJ 13 diameter 14 pitch and didn't help much. I also put a fuel tester gauge and it stays at 40lbs psi. Any ideas?

Is the check engine light on? My 99 GT-40 had the low oil pressure sensor go out and it went in to limp mode. It would not rev past 2500 rpms. I don't remember whether it was reduced power up to that point but it was obvious the computer would not let it rev above that point. The oil pressure gauge showed good pressure so I knew that wasn't the problem.

The low oil pressure sensor and the oil pressure gauge sending unit both are connected to a stalk on the side of the engine block. I replaced the sensor and it solved my problem.

Just a suggestion to check that.

Has it ever run correctly while you have owned it?

            Vortech,
the engine light isn't on so not sure if it would be the low oil pressure sensor and the oil pressure gauge is shows good pressure. I talked with Townsend from nautique parts and he suggested it might be the throttle position sensor or the knock sensor. They should be here by Saturday already changed the distributor cap, plugs, wires and fuel filter haven't been able to test it on the water. If the new sensors don't work going to get a low oil pressure sensor and see it that's the magical fix.
            Silent seven,
unfortunately no it hasn't I bought it out of Reno Nevada and heard it run via Skype and sounded great. The guy I bought it from has given suggestions and even offered to help pay for some of it. Lesson learned...

Good luck with it. The TPS sensor is a pretty easy fix but you can easily test that without replacing it. I don't remember the voltage but it should have (IIRC) just under 1 volt at idle and then goes up from there as you open the throttle.

The knock sensor could be the problem since it will cause the ecu to retard timing which would certainly cause issues.

The TFI module on the distributor is another possibility but that thing is expensive.

Sorry to hear about the problems. I also bought my boat without running it (not my desired situation) but it's worked out OK so far.

I would start with the basics - who knows what someone did before you to sort it out (and maybe f it up more).
                • check all sensor wiring for tightness, corrosion. Clean and attach.
                • do basic diagnostics on the key ones - engine temp, throttle position, manifold pressure. If you can nab a STAR tester to pull the codes, do it.
                • would check the base timing to confirm it's correct. Retarted timing would absolutely lead to lack of power or limited top end.

Me and another person recently solved somewhat similar problems by replacing the distributor with a remanufactured unit. It seems the ignition pickup on boats of our vintage is suspect leading to a variety of odd issues. You can get a NAPA rebuild for about $100. Check out my thread with information on my problem, his with part numbers and pictures of the units. Also, if you need a TFI, you should be able to reference the ford part number from the distributor for much lower prices.

                Good luck!
