I have a 77 Nautique. The carburated 351W was rebuilt about 5 years ago. We put it in the water and the motor is knocking something fierce under load at 3500RPM. My guess is the mains are shot. We don want to do a rebuild again since this is the original block. My question is will any 351W longblock do? Is there anything specific about a boat motor I need to be concerned about other than the accessories. Ford racing has a 351W complete motor for about 3Gs. I know I would have no use for the front drive assembly. Anything else? Should it just bolt in and go? The current motor is using a Chrysler Distributor, do we still need to use this dist or can we go ford specific. My dad bought this boat new and other than the motor, it's in great condition. We don't need a 350hp monster, just want to get it back running so we can use it again. Help please. Thanks

RE: 1977 SN 351W help
Before I rebuilt the engine in my '79 it was knocking pretty bad. It ended up being scuffed pistons/cylinder walls the main and rod bearings were fine. You should do some investigation to make sure what your problem is. How is your oil pressure? If it's ok then it's probably not bearings. Did anything happen to the boat before this noise started (i.e. overheat, run w/o water, run low on oil, etc?)
Your boat is a RH rotation engine (standard automotive is LH), so a standard 351W longblock will not work. You should however be able to get a remanufactured RH long block for well under $3k. When I was searching I found a couple places that had decent warranties and the price was around $1500. As for distributor you can change distributors if you want to but be sure and replace it with a marine specific unit.
For an old Nautique such as yours you may want to check out http://www.correctcraftfan.com, nothing against Planet Nautique but CCFan tends to cater to the older Nautiques and this site caters more towards the new (I have a '79 and an '02 so I check out both)
