    Defective impeller?

Just received new impeller for my '89 SN 2001 from
"Discount Inboard Marine". It looks exactly like the old one I removed but the male inner lock will not slip down on the receiving part of the pump housing. It is just a smidgin too big. Has anyone else had this problem?
Should we try to file down the part on the housing or is it indeed a defective part? Any comments?

Ok, I will bite...what is a male inner lock? What is the receiving part of the pump housing?

Are you talking about the woodruff key, shaft, cam, pump body, impellar bore, etc?

Thanks David, dang if I know but you obviosly do. But in any case, I talked with tech rep at Discount Marine and he advised to slightly file down the key on the pump housing. A few minutes of such filing and the impeller slipped on just fine.

Gotcha! the woodruff key was preventing the impellar from slipping onto the pump shaft. That key must be positioned just right or it will bind when installing new impellars. Filing it will make it easier and usually not cause any problems. Glad you got it back together...make sure you got the orientation correct or you will pump water from your engine into the lake which is not good. LH rotation engines, cam screw faces toward engine block. RH rotation engines, cam screws faces away from engine block. Hope I got that right.
