2001 SAN GT40 Died and Won't Start

I was driving my 2001 SAN (GT40) this afternoon at about 2800 RPM and it just died on me. When I go to start it again it turns over but will not start. The fuel pump is working (I can hear it working during the start sequence) and the engine fires but doesn't continue to run after the initial firing. It's been running solid all summer and I used it this morning without any issues. It started fine and ran for about 5 minutes before it died.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Easy stuff first. Sure it has fuel in it? Sending units in these tanks hang up all the time and will show you have fuel on the gauge when its actually empty.

Sounds a whole lot like an issue with the lanyard or the on/off/bilge switch.

Thanks for the quick response jward. Lack of fuel was our first thought as well. I have since put fuel in it to make sure and continue to have the same problem. I also checked to make sure the safety lanyard was properly set, which it was.

Check the on/off/bilge switch. The wiring can pop off the back and cause this issue, or the switch itself can go bad.

Switch the "on" and "bilge" wires on the back of the switch, put it in bilge mode, and see if it starts. If it does, there's your issue.

Thank you. I'll take a look at it. I figured since all electrical components seem to be running properly it was a fuel pump/mechanical issue (fyi: I'm not very mechanically inclined).

Just swapped the wires on the on/off/bilge switch and it still won't start. Any other thoughts?

Put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and see if you have 39 psi while cranking. It will take a few rotations to get the pressure up. Take spare spark plug attach it to one of plug wires from the boat. I unplug 5 cylinder because I can reach it and the key. Put the bottom of the plug on a good ground spot the block. Crank the motor. Do you see a blue spark. You may get shocked so if for some reason you can't get shocked don't do this. Get someone else to help. Fuel pressure gauges are cheap. You also do the loaner program at O'Reilly if you don't want to own the tool. You needs to determine if it is no spark or no fuel.

Might the lanyard switch itself have gone bad? I thought I remember people having issues with that (as in the lanyard may very well be connected, but he switch has gone bad). Jumper the lanyard switch and see if it will turn over.

If the lanyard switch is bad you wont hear the fuel pumps. You can test this by turning the key. If you hear the fuel pumps all is well with this part. Now remove the lanyard turn key. Now there will be no fuel pump sound. If with the lanyard on you don't hear the fuel pumps then you should jumper the lanyard.
