Boat drops to limp mode when crossing wakes

First off, I've read on this forum and others about my symptoms and I have developed a theory about what may be wrong. However, I don't want to assume I'm right and buy the part w/o hearing form you guys.

Symptoms (and it's getting worse and worse).
Cruising speed and hit a few wakes. The boat will drop from cruising to limp mode. When it does this, the perfectpass reboots and comes back up. Something beeps and I think it's the perfect pass. The boat is stuck in limp mode until i turn it off and restart the engine. Then it runs fine for some undetermined amount of time. Recently the problem seems to be getting worse. I can be just cruising with no wakes and the engine will drop to limp mode. It seems to be that if I run the engine at a pretty low speed (10-12MPH), the problem will not occur.
Today (and this has only happened this one time), the engine went to limp mode, I turned it off, the Check Engine light lit and the boat would not restart. I had to turn off power to the batteries to get it going again.

That's it guys - can't wait for your feedback.

Incase people search and find this thread later, I wanted to close the loop. My positive (red) battery cable came loose from the breaker box at the driver feet. I had to pull the breaker box out and tighten it back down. If this is happening to you, also consider replacing your potentiometer (about $125-$150 depending on year and it's a really simple fix).
