PCM 1.23 Transmission Reverse tick

When I put the boat in reverse I get a loud tick tick tick that repeats. Forward is fine and no slip in either direction. Any advice? Fluid level is good and changing the fluid has no impact. 2 quarts in the tranny. Ready to put the boat away and trying to determine if I can fix it myself or find a good place to ship it off to and get a solid rebuild so it lasts another 14 years.
