    Gear Box Oil?

Does anyone know what oil goes in the gear box of a 97 super sport? I am planning on changing the engine oil and tranny oil and would also like to change the gear box but I didn't see what kind it uses anywhere in the manual. Any help is appreciated. By the way it has the GT-40 engine if that makes a difference.

    RE: Gear Box Oil?

I believe only two oils were ever used: Dexron III (GM auto tranny oil) or straight 20W engine oil. To determine what yours has in it, pull the dip stick and check the color. Dexron III is red and engine oil is brown.

If the oil is brown (20W) you can substitute Dexron III, but you will need to change the oil three times in order to get most of the 20W out. After you drain and fill with Dexron III, but the tranny in gear for 30 seconds or so to mix the oil well, then drain and repeat three times. Make sure you keep the cutlass bearing lubricated with water when placing the tranny in gear.

      DavidF,
      Thanks,
I know the transmission uses Dextron III but is that also what the gear box uses? there are two seperate things in the V-drive drive train.

Really? I am sorry, but I do not know. I would think a gearbox uses gear oil similiar to what is used in an outdrive on I/O's. I have no clue what weight oil would be used. Do the same thing, take an oil sample. Gear oil has a very strong smell (sulfer?).

I don't understand... The "gearbox" and "transmission" are the same things.

The Vector drive system is composed of 3 primary components: Motor, Transmission, and V-drive transfer case. For the V-drive use just standard SAE 30 weight motor oil. For the transmisson use Dextron III...
          How about \"Chales\"?

Yee, I think SBT3 is referring to the V Drive as the "gear box"

I have an 01 SAN. Per the owners manual "Refill the V-Drive
with SAE #30 weight oil." Instructions for changing the V-Drive
oil are on page 8.6. It is recommended to change after the
first 100 hrs and every 500 hrs thereafter.

Yeah I was refering to the V-drive unit as the gear box. I looked on the unit and it said to use SAE 30. This was the first time I have changed the fluids on my 97 Super sport which I bought this winten other than the initial oil change I did at the beggining of the season. Everything was easy to change, it took me about 2 hours to change all three the engine, trans, and v-drive. I think next time it will go quicker since I know how to do it now. Thanks for the posts.
