My engine suddenly died and didn't start again...

Hello!

I just came back from a nice trip with my Ski Nautic 2001 (89). We had just finished a great boarding session when we were riding with about 30 mph back home. Suddenly the engine died and didn't fire up a bit afterwards. I checked the fuel pump. There were gas in the lower hole and absolutely no gas in the transparent sight tube. Seemed to be ok.

The starter is working fine but it sounds like every ignition spark is gone with the wind. Nothing, absolutely dead!

The ignition switch didn't worked well the last two or three boarding sessions. I had to turn the Key at least five or seven times or kick the batterie first. Maybe this has something to do with it.

Does anybody have an idea what the issue could be?

I have a freind going through the same thing with his 86. We have narrowed it down to the coil or the ign. switch. He is going to replace both and see what happens. If your coil has some age and it gets hot it can give problems. Next time it does it take a towel and soak it with cold water or put ice in it and place on the coil to cool it off and see what happens.

Ok, first I wanne thank you for your hint. But would you still think it is the coil, when I say the engine didn't start either two ours later - already cooled off. I imagine, when I am gonna come to my boat tonight it still won't run...

To eliminate the ignition switch, check for current on the pos. side of the coil. If you have current there your switch is ok. Then you need to check your condensor and points. It could still be the coil. These are the things I would check for. Good Luck!

Does an '89 have a resistor on the 12v lead to the coil? If so, check it. Check by connecting all wires to one side of the resistor (effectively bypassing the resistor). If the engine starts, replace the resistor.

Usually when an engine just dies (especially at speed) it is an electrical (ignition) issue. A fuel problem will usually cause the engine to sputter before it dies. If you have electronic ignition, then you should suspect the ignition module. Go ahead and replace coil (cheap assurance).

Gotcha!!! It was the resistor. After replacing it the engine started smoothly as usually...
