    Running Hot

Our 89, 2001 with a 351 PCM motor (530 hrs) started running hot last week. the temp got up to 200 on the gauge before I shut her down. After replacing both the impellor and thermostat she still runs warm at around 180 (normal range was at 160). Any suggestions?

Did you read the markings on the Thermostat to make sure it was a 160. They might have given you a 180 by mistate. I have had that happen before with my car. It might be worth a look!

Check your strainer and hoses. I have the same boat and it runs 160+ at speed but will climb to 180 quickly if I slow to idle speed.

The inboat strainer is clear and the strainer under the boat is clear. What do you mean by checking the hoses other than for leaks? Also the temp runs the same in or out of the water.

The thermo is actually a 140, I double checked it. This was purchased at West Marine according to there specs for this motor.

Did you add any accessory that would draw a decent amount of power from the elec system? The more power that is drawn, the higher the gauge reads. On my 90 if I turn the heater on the gauge reads about 10 degrees higher. Just throwing it out there in case.

I just went through the same thing. I replaced the temp sending unit.... It now shows 140. Use to run at 160 for the past four years. Before replacing the sender it shot up to 200. I did everything you did with the same results. I also have added an extra ground wire to the guages as well as a new 10 guage wire to the ignition switch. This solved my temp jumping when turning on elec acc.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give that a try.

Might have to check your impeller housing. It may be worn so it's not pushin up as much water. I have a flush kit on mine and it run hot once when my mrs forgot to close off the flush valve.

Found the problem, it was a bad ground to the dash. M3Fan headed me in the right direction, thank for the help.
