    replacing '95 strut

I hit a log and knock the strut out of alignment about an 1 1/2", I ordered a new strut and when i picked it up from the dealer I compared the plate holes of the bent strut with the new one, the holes were as much as 1/4" off, the tech at the dealer said to drill out the plate holes enough for the bolts to fit through the boat. After I got home and put the new strut under the boat I just couldn't bring myself to wallow out those holes without a second opinion, It just doesn't seem right to make the holes larger on such a important part.
Should I return it or will the next one be the same?
Where can you get this part other than thru the dealer?
Can the old strut be repaired?
