transmission upgrade on 1996 ski nautique

A buddy of mine is looking at a 1996 nautique and the owner claims to have upgraded the tranny is this common or should he be weary of the seller.

What exactly did they "upgrade"? These trannies are all pretty bullet proof so I would seek a lot of details and find out "why" it was done.

How would you upgrade the tranny? I do not even think there is a better tranny on the market. Assuming PCM reduction unit.

The PCM power plus trans is very dependable, I've worked on more borg warner trans than pcm. Only thing you could have done is rebuild it or replaced it with the same model of trans without major modifications.
