    RE: vinyl tear

I had some 1/8" tears fixed on my boat where the air chair had cut the vinyl, and I can't find the repairs. I would think it would be worth a try, but it might pull back open since it is so large. Is it in a high stress area?

IF on the coaming pad or any piece near the edge, you can sometimes remove some staples (min 1'), pull the vinyl over the edge, & restaple.

ag4ever, Did you do the repair? What kit do you reccommend? I tried the vinyl repair kit from west marine and it peeled off. My tear is about 1/2 inch.

On this subject, I had a sharp piece on the zipper of a swimsuit poke 5 holes in the seat as someone slid down into the driver's seat. Any suggestions? I know if I let it go it will turn into bigger problem? It's very noticeable and I assumed I'd just have to bite the bullet and replace the back of the driver's chair at the end of the year.

No, I had my dealer do the repair. I had like four little nicks and pin pricks repaired for the minimum charge of around $100. I know that if I tried to do the repair it would look like hammered dog poo. i would say that getting it repaired at an upholstery shop would be the way to go. Some shops will come to you, and some you will have to go to them. I guess it really depends on the cost of the new skin. If my holes were all in one skin, i would have just bought a new skin, but mine were on a seat back, both coming pads, and the observer's seat. The $100 minimum was much less than the cost of those skins.

Typically on a tear, the repair involves glueing a "patch" on the backside of the vinyl to hold the tear closed. Then the leftover scar is repaired conventionally.

Doe's any one know if you can buy factory skins from C.C.? I would like to keep it original if I can. Some of my seams are starting to seperate. Lucky no tears so far. Everyone's been carefull with the interior.

Yes you can. Very expensive. I believe one of the CC distributors has all the patterns and gets a local shop to make the skins to order.

search the internet for colorglo or colorglow ...apparently they are in the vinyl restoring business for cars, planes boats.
My local franchisee here did a good job on a half inch tear on my rear compartment vinyl

                      RE: vinyl repair

I have used automotive vinyl repair kits with good suucees. The kit to puchase includes the electric flat iron for bonding the rapir material. You need to be carefull not to overheat the area being repaired or you'll end up with a bigger mess. If you can't find a kit at a local auto parts store you can purchase them from JC Whitney. The only problem is that the finish color may not match. I had this problem on my white seats and ended up painting the seat with white vinyl spray paint which to my surprise has lasted over 10 years now. Another alternative is to check with the local new car dealers. They usually have detailers they contract that specialize in cosmetic repairs including rips in vinyl.
