    1990 SN Transmission Knocking

My 1990 Nauty is experencing a little knock coming from the transmition. I have the engine set at a low idle and when I put it in gear, forward mainly, there is a noticable knock or clatter from the back of the tranny. The noise will disapear as soon as I give it more gas and the boat picks up speed.

    Has anyone experienced this before?

You are experiencing the play in the transmission that comes from normal wear. The engine should be idling at 600 rpm's in gear. That should mak it go away. If not then you may be getting ready to replace the damper plate.

The early PCM trannies made a squeal/chatter/buzz at idle. There is a kit available from SkiDim for 35 bucks that solves this problem and is very easy to install. It was a recall item at the time. I chased this noise for years and finally it is gone. I'd do that first, and if it doesn't solve it then swap the damper plate.

YES it was the damper plate but it made this sound because my RPM's were too low, I've increased it since and it's OK now.

        Thanks to all.

I am having the same prolbem with my 89 "Antique". I have had to increase my idle to keep the oil pressure up enough so the alarm would not sound off but then the sheriff gave me crap for creating too much wake. I have a gear knocking noise and I hope this will fix it up. This is some great information and thanks to all.
