Hey need a little help...

I have a GT-40, and, of course, I do not have my owner's manual, and I am trying to find out what type of oil I should use (weight), and whay filter it takes.

The filter will be an FL-1A.

I just changed mine and I used a NAPA 21515 filter. My dealer recommends a 20W-50 oil, it is NAPA Premium Performance, he thinks this is better than what CC recommends. for what its worth.

here's my $0.02:

Do you let your boat warm up before loading the engine? If yes, then use the straight 40 as recommended by the manufacturer. If no, then use 20-40 or 20-50 so your engine's internals don't gall when it's cold. I always used straight 40W but I had a 15 minute idle to fast water so my GT-40 always had plenty of warm up time.

I did lots of research on this issue recently. The multi weight oil is getting better and better so I don't hesitate using the 15-40 as called for in the Excalibur manual. As long as one keeps the oil change intervals to 50 hours, there should not be a problem. The viscosity extenders in multi weight oil are much better than they were a few years ago. In the GT-40, the manual, and Ford calls for straight weight. With Mikeski's advice of proper warm up that's what I would use. Frankly, I always used 30 weight even in the dead of summer and it was fine. Besides, PCM insists you should use the straight weight in the GT-40. They said something about the oil pump. Not sure of more than that.

I must say that I'm a bit wary of vehicle manufacturer recommendations on oil. Think of the gas and polution benefits associated with a 5-30 oil which is recommended for my 02 Yukon--spread out over 500,000 vehicles. Are the manufacturers throwing us under the bus to pick up that extra half mile per gallon per vehicle? Maybe. Does this draw into question the recommendations by PCM/Indmar if they are relying upon the manufacturer? I think so. I'm just not so sure that the manufacturer's motives are pure. What do they care if a gas motor only lasts 120,000 before a major rebuild. By that time, its out of warranty and probably not in the original buyer's hands.

I've used Shell Rotella 15w40 in every Nautique I've owned since '84. Ran Amsoil HD Marine and Diesel 15w40 in my '97 and 2000. Recently switched back to Rotella. Hard to find straight 40 weight. I also change oil twice a season, which figures out to about 20 hours per change.

They told me for my 502 Python,
