Weird noise's Good or BAD????????

Took My new to me boat (1990 SNOB) to the lake for a week long vacation and notices two sounds that I did not like.

When towing a skier or just doing 25mph and slightly turning to the right it sounds like Im running over debree, or the sound chop makes when it hits the hull. Did not affect performance or anything just loud.

Also when towing a skier or just driving, and have to turn around to pick up a rider, I will turn hard left while throttling back to an idle. WHen I do so the boat makes a high pitched skreatch, Then softens to a deaper skreatch. Its not very loud but definatley noticeable.

My first thought was strut bushing is squeaking?

Since im rambling off questions, I started to smell gas all the time towards the end of the week. Turns out Puddles of gas were gathering right in front of the Holly Carb. My guess would be the Accelerator pump.
Anyone have to change that? How much and do I need a marine one or can I just go down to the Parts store?

Any experice out there with similar sounds.

New to inboards? They make lots of funny sounds when turning as the rudder interrupts the natural flow of water coming off the prop. Have somebody that is familiar with the usual sounds that a Nautique makes ride in the boat if possible.

Carburator

I had the same fuel problem on my 94 SNOB. Was a loose connection between fuel line and carb, or more accurately between carb and the fitting that makes up with the fuel line. Previous owner had the same problem (apparently) as there is fuel stain on the intake manifold and pipe dope on the fittings.

Got new fuel line and fittings from www.skidim.com.

On the noises, my boat groans when turning but doesn't screech.

You probably do need an acc. pump. Not difficult to change and you can get them at autozone. You ask for acc. pump for 600 cfm Holley carb. Groaning sound is there on every older Nautique i've been in.Mine does it very noticable to the left. If the fuel leak happens to be the fuel line pipe dope won't fix it as the threads don't seal the connection,the flared end of the fuel line do.Make sure the large fitting in the carb is tight.It also has a metal gasket between it and the carb. housing.Good luck.

Also, there was no SNOB in 1990- I believe they started in 92 or 93- you probably have a Sport nautique.

If you don't know the history of the boat or if the carb hasn't been rebuilt in the last 4years you should get yourself a rebuild kit from www.skidim.com and replace every part in the carb. I've rebuilt the carb on my 90 Sport Nautique several times since I bought the boat new. Gaskets, orings, rubber seals will fail over time and a rebuild every several years will keep the engine running in top form and prevent catastrophic fuel leaks. The worst I experienced is a failure of the orings on the tube connecting the two float bowels. Fuel overflowed the top of the hot manifold and started to fill the bilge before I smelled the gas. The other, more dificult, failure to diagnose was an oring failure on the tube in the low speed circuit of the carb. This allowed excess fuel to leak into the low speed fuel circuit resulting in a very rich idle mixture.
You should also be able to get a rebuild kit from a good auto parts store. They will need to know more then just that it's a 4160 Holley so you will need to give them the carb number located on the low speed float bowel. Holley lists them in their marine carb. catalog (not automotive).

As far as the noises go. I'm not sure what's making the chop sound. Never experienced it on my boat. Check the condition of the prop an prop shaft icluding strut bearings. The whining noise you describe sound exactly like the sound my boat has made since i bought it. I haven't quite figured out what causes it but I think its a normal sound coming from the tranny. I change the oil in the tranny on a regular basis and have never had a problem with it so I'm not worried about it.

When you rebuild the carb it might also be wise to check out a metering block.
