Try acetone first. It won't hurt the gel coat.

I did it on mine with a small amount of paint remover on a rag and then took one letter at a time and wiped it off. As soon as the letter/number was gone I rinsed the area thoroughly and moved to the next. Kindof risky but it worked great and they came off quickly. The key is not letting the remover sit on the paint for any length of time.

RE: removing Painted on registration numbers

        All,

A few years ago some punks spray painted my car. Called my uncle who does custom body work for a hobby. He convinced me to wash the paint off with easy off oven cleaner. So...after all my neighbors paid to have their cars repainted. They were not happy to watch me wash the paint right off with Easy Off. Follow with a good soap and water wash. Five years latter...paint was still great (then I sold it to my cousin...his mom has since repainted it so her bullet hole stickers look better...shes 68. Go figure).

        So...try it!

Ditto on the oven cleaner. Talked to the Nautique dealer at the Masters about repainting the stripes on my 83 and he told me they remove old stripes with oven cleaner. He said just don't leave it on more than a few minutes and then wash off.

This has been discussed quite a bit on correctcraftfan.com, because
there are a lot of folks on that site who are into restoring older boats.
Oven cleaner does seem to be the method of choice. If you
go to that site and search oven cleaner, you'll see multiple posts describing the procedures used and the precautions.
