    Goofy trailer light action

I have a Ramlin boat trailer. The boat is a 1999...so I am assuming that the trailer is from that year (plus or minus).

The problem that I am having is that my break lights seem to be acting very weird. For instance, they will work fine when my headlights are not on. But, when the headlights are on, they start acting weird....all the lights will blink slightly when I have one of the signals on....or when I hit the brakes and have the signal on....they all go out.... What's even weirder.....(if that's a word).....the lights act differently depending on which of my vehicles are towing it.

I thought this was classic symptoms of a issue with grounding. I completely checked all the ground connections and found a couple with some corrosion. So I cleaned all those up and it seemed to work fine for one day. Now they are acting weird again.

I am wondering what could be the problem. Any thoughts?

As a side question....I have read where it is recommended to unplug the wiring harness before putting the boat/trailer into the water. I have never done that....and I know several other boat owners that do not do this. Could this be my problem.....and who else out there recommends unplugging prior to putting it into the water....

What you're describing still sounds like it could be caused by ground. Unfortunately, tracing ground issues is kind of a pain. Not sure what else it could be, though.

The unplugging your trailer lights is old-school advice to keep your brake lights from going on underwater, getting hot and being exposed to cool(er) water, reducing their lifespan. Your current trailer should have sealed taillights so unplugging is not necessary.

jhiestand......ground issue - that's what I was thinking also. Any special tools or indicators to help trace the problem?

Unplugging - I agree that the new sealed lights should prevent any problems...

I don't know of any tools or anything that will directly help you to troubleshoot.

I've had similar issues with older trailers and I solved them by running a ground wire from each light, back through the trailer and into the ground on your trailer connector. That way you're not relying on the receiver ball as your ground source. If you've already checked all your light's grounds and the ground up near the hitch, running a separate ground wire might be your next option.

Found a thread similar to yours on Trailer Boats. http://boards.trailerboats.com/cgi-b...c;f=4;t=001518

Also, Champion Trailers has a good diagram online for troubleshooting. http://www.championtrailers.com/4%20...ring%20dia.pdf

You can still unplug and back up on the ramp slowly with out the surge actuator hitting the brakes. The angle of the ramp and gravity will keep the surge from activating.

Does your trailer have the swingaway tongue? If it does try running a ground wire form the grounding point of the white wire at the tongue to the other side of the hinge point on the trailer.
