Swim Platform/Lift Ring

I have a 2001 SAN.

The question I have is what is the plastic piece called that separates the rear lifting rings underneath the swim platform from the water? Second, has anyone bought one of these before, or had one fall off? Third, how much does one of these things cost?

I guess it would be a rear lifting ring boot.

1. It's called "The Plastic thingie that ALWAYS falls off

I think it's simply a cover to prevent exhaust from coming up through the swim platform but still allows access to the lift rings without removing the platform. I am getting some teak this winter and am adding a transom guard to the platform that will cover the holes. I won't be able to lift the boat without taking off the platform, but I don't think I will ever have to lift the boat, so I won't be buying these plastic falloffs anymore.

Now I have lovely screws all over the transom below the deck.

They are called "transom cup" P/N: 433958. I paid $28.42 for mine. The holes in the new cup may not line up with the holes on the old cup. Also, you may have to trim off some of the top edge.

You may need a different P/N as I have a '93 SN....so post '97 may be different.

My bad, they are the "Transom cups that always fall off".

Hey flux, you're right. The cups are put there to slow down exhaust fumes.

Question: How are they coming off? Do you take your platforms on and off
frequently? I have an 01 and have not lost one.

I have no idea how they come off. We got the boat used and one was missing already. The guy said he had replaced one and then the other fell off so he said "forget it". So we only had one and you know how things go on a lake, it was there when we put the boat in, gone when we pulled it out. I never remove my platform, but do use the mounts for the transom straps when trailering, maybe they got stressed on the road and busted off, WHO KNOWS???

As far as the fumes go, I don't run the engine with somebody on the swim deck. It's just one of my self proclaimed rules that prevent me from dumping someone, exposing them to CO, or heaven forbid running them over in reverse. I got two kids on the boat most weekends, so I am extra cautious and consider that you simply cannot be too careful. I wanna make one of those transom savers so I will shape the teak to cover the holes and make it removable with some brass countersunk screws.

The Transom cups fall off on my boat, I would rather spend some coin on teak and not deal with them ever again. Unfortunately all the mounting screws are still there and my transom is black, so the white sealant is showing. Only looks bad on the trailer though, I can live with it, that's why I bought a used boat in the first place.

Not claiming any problem. For years, the swimsteps had open slats. It was
only after some liability due to teak surfing that the companies began putting
solid swimsteps on the boat. If you look at the 1990 models, they had
a plastic plate screwed to the bottom of the old slatted platforms. If you operate
your boat sensibly, as you do, the open vents aren't going to be a problem.

It is not an issue of CO from riding or sitting on the platform, the cups are really meant to protect the rear seat passengers from CO while idling. I question how well it works in any event.

Flux: If you decide to not replace the cups, then the obvious solution to the unsightly screw holes is to fill them with black silicon, not the white 3M or Boatlife caulk. If you decide to replace the cups, you must be careful when tightening the screws. If the srews are overtightened, it bends and stresses the plastic to the point of breaking in short order. If you look at a new cup, you will understand what I am saying. If the screws are tightened correctly, the cups will last indefinately.

Some how, some way, those things are gone.....and I ain't paying for new ones. It's one of those cases of the $50k boat or car with the $5 afterthought slapped on there when they were worried about getting destroyed in a CO lawsuit. Maybe ours just did not like us, so they bailed into the lake or took a leap on the highway. I'll take the coin and buy some teak to cover the holes and keep my board from bashing the transom when I am getting in the bindings.

It's all good and I definately gotta get that white silicone out of there. Put it on the winter to do list!! That and that **** glovebox shock, the one I trusted and it let the lid smash my finger!!! I was so furious I almost turned green and ripped the tower off the boat!!!

Cool - Thanks for the help. I have been debating what to do with these. I suspect that it will jsut remain missing for the near future.
