    Carb Problem

My boat is now running a bit rough, At an Idel of about 800 the boat chugs or pulsates. Watching the tack it may rise a 100 rpms then drops down then up again.

Very annoying. Im thinking a carb rebuild should do the trick. Anyone ever experience any thing similar.

After about 1000rmp's it runs like a top.

    1990 sport nautique.

    Thanks

    RE: Carb Problem

My boat was doing the same kinda thing. It was a tune up issue. I replaced cap, rotor, points, wires and plugs and it idles and runs fine. It was also running rich so I replaced the power valve in the Holly carb and now it is 100%. Hope this helps

      I had same problem

Just wanted to let you know that two years ago I had the same exact problem. Life was depressing because I thought my boat was junk. Fortunately a buddy of mine rebuilt the carb and it's been running like a dream ever since. Someone from this site had suggested a fellow on ebay that sold new carbs for about $ 450 that was much better than a dealer. I looked for the fellow's listings (he was in Florida) but can't find it. Get your carb fixed and your life will be good again. The carb really affects the entire boat and nothing but bad things can happen until you get this fixed. Mine actually got to the point where it was doing very dangerous back firing. - Good luck.

I'm with Brewski. I'd do a tune up first. Plugs, cap, rotor, ect. before you go into building a carb. Not only is the other stuff simpler, but cheaper too.

It might very well be the carb, but I'd start small.

Have you ever had that carb rebuilt? If so, when?

better yet, install the points eliminator kit and be done with it forever. Add a carb rebuild and it should run like new.

Definately go with the breakerless ign. if you can. SO much less hassle.

Look at thttp://www.pertronix.com. They have a electronic conversion. I did it on my 66 and it stll runs great 4 years later ( I sold the boat to a friend).

It's an electronic ignition system instead of a points and condensor system that will quit working if the spacing gets off, or the 2 points do not come together 100% flush, or if there gets to be any HINT of moisture. Before we but the elect. ign. parts on our boat we had to file the supid things down and re-set the gap every time we went to the lake. Then we couldn't kill the boat at the lake b/c we could never get it started again. None of that since we updated it.

Ordered a Carb Rebuild Kit From Mid Ohio and it came yesturday. Super Sweet service and 15% discount for Planet Nautique Posters. Awesome!

So there was no way I was gonna tackle taking my carb apart so I took it off and took it to my Father-in Law. (mechanic) He scared the crap out of me as he ripped into it. He had it apart in like 20 min. I kept saying he better watch what hes doing. He looked at me with "that Look" I scraped the gaskets off and replaced the O-rings. He had it back together in 40 min.

Bolted it on and this morning and fired it up. Like a top. Now To the river tomorrow for the real test. ( and yes I did have the hose hooked up )

Before this I did change the plugs and they were all pretty choched up. I didnt replace the rotor or wires cause the previous owner said it was done recently. Still ran like crap at low idel.

Thanks to all who chimed in Ill post tomorrow's results on monday!
