Tach & Carb '80 Ski Nautique

Hey Guys ! Had the boat out today ; 1st problem: Would not start up right away while on the trailer just after backing it in. Cranked over just fine, could tell it was a fuel issue. Poured a "dash" of gasoline in the carb, and it fired right up. Maybe I need to rebuild my carb; it's a Holley, does it have some sort of automatic choke ? , because if so, it ain't workin' !!

2nd problem, tachometer is not working at all. Have only had the boat a few months, not sure if it even worked when I bought it. Where do I start. I'm not even sure where the wiring goes to on it, I think maybe the distributor?

Thanks In Advance To All For Your Time!!!....chris......

    RE: Tach & Carb

It should have an electric choke. Did you stroke the throttle before cranking to get some gas into the carb? With the flame arrestor off, when you push the throttle you should see gas spray into the primaries. If not your accelerator pump is bad and will need replacing. The tach wire should connect to the distributor.

      RE: Tach & Carb

Actually the tach wire connects to the negative side of the coil. If it is not working you probably have a bad connection somewhere or a bad tach. As far as the carb goes, take the flame arrestor off and stroke the throttle. The choke flap should close. If not it needs adjusting or the choke coil inside the black housing on the side of the carb may be bad. Bob2001 is correct on the accelerator pump. One thing on that though, if it is bad you will have a hesitation on acceleration.
