Hello, I am about to change the oil on my 89 ski nautique and have one question. Do you let the motor heat up and then change it or do you do it wile it's cold? I also wanted to say thanks for all the great info people have given me on other post. The people on this site are awesome.

RE: Oil change question
Conventional wisdom is to change oil when it's warm so it flows out quicker and more thoroughly. However, even steaming hot the oil comes out of my GT40 through the quick-drain at an unbelievably slow rate. So slow that even right after an entire morning on the river it still takes well over an hour for my pan to drip out. I've since resorted to using a drill pump to drain my oil and even when it's cold, I get more oil out than I ever did when I let it drain by gravity.
Bottom line -- a pump will allow you to drain oil while cold. Now, some engine guru might correct me with a different reason you should do it while hot, but if it's just to get the oil to drain more quickly a drill pump will do the trick even when cold.'08 Super Air Nautique 210

RE: Oil change question
One tip when draining. Make sure the hose is pulled all the way through the drain hole. If not it may have a dip in the hose and cause slow draining. My 83 and every other boat I have owned have taken about 15 - 20 minutes to drain because the ID of the hose is smaller than the drain hole in the pan. If you are winterizing it a great time to take care of other things while the oil is draining.

RE: Oil change question
Remember to put the cap back on.
If you really want to get all of it out ........let it drain over night. Warm oil does go a little faster, but not a lot.2008 Super Air 210 Team
